How Does Etizolam Work?

Etizolam, also known as Etizest, Etilaam, and among others, is a psycho-active drug under the thienodiazepene family, which has been widely known for triggering anxiolytic, muscle relaxing, anti-convulsant, amnesia, and hypnotic characteristics. A milligram of the drug is equivalent to around 10mg of Diazepam.

The drug requires a doctor’s prescription and isn’t widely regarded as a controlled substance in different parts of the globe. Given its status, its widespread popularity as a drug can be seen in today’s chemical vendors who sell the drug for research purposes.

Similar to that of benzodiazepenes, abruptly stopping the intake of the medication can be life threatening or dangerous for those who have used it for prolonged periods. A times, abruptly stopping intake of the drug can lead to immediate seizures or in worst cases, death. It’s advisable to have one’s dose “tapered” by gradually minimizing the amount taken daily up to the point where oral intake of the drug has completely stopped.

Etizolam Pharmacology

Etizolam offers a wide range of effects by binding to receptor sites of benzodiazepine and amplifying its effects of the GABA (Gamma Aminobutyric Acid) neurotransmitter by acting directly on its receptors. Since the site is considered to be a prolific inhibitory receptor within the brain, its modulation can lead to a sedative effect of Etizolam within the nervous system.

Mechanism of Action

The drug’s mechanism of action is somewhat similar to other derivatives of anxiolytic benzodiazepenes. Its mechanism is made via its own GABA neurotransmission. A key distinction between the medication and other benzodiazepine derivatives is that its selective and high affinity binding to the postsynaptic GABA receptor subtype a2 subunit. Such subunit activation leads to anxiolytic specific effect.

In addition, Etizolam is said to have less potential for trigger rebound anxiety in terms of withdrawal since it prevents the a2 subunit up-regulation unlike benzodiazepine derivatives.

Etizolam causes a muscle-relaxing effects via its influence on the central spinal cord. Studies have shown its benefits in minimizing symptoms in cervical spondylosis, cancer pain, tension headache, and lumbar disease.

Etizolam is mentioned to enhance concentrations of neurotransmitters, norepinephrine, and serotonin via a blockage of neuronal re-uptake of the neurotransmitters. This action allows the tablet to have extra anti-depressant properties. Possessing both anti-depressant and anxiolytic characteristics shows how the drug can be an advantage in treating depression with anxiety disorders.

The side effects of the drug are often subjective — based on personal experiences from individuals taking the medication. The effects rarely happen at the same time, but increased dosage will increase the likelihood of such instances and could lead to a wide range of unwanted effects.

Etizolam is expected to have low toxicity levels. But it can be fatal when combined with other depressants (opioids, alcohol, and etc…). It’s advisable to take Etizolam drug alone (or as indicated by your physician) to avoid catastrophic medical instances.
